IELTS Listening Map Questions: Practice Strategy

Study the Map First

Before the recording begins, identify the starting point, compass directions, entrances, paths, rooms, roads, and labels already shown on the map.

This preparation matters because once the audio starts, you should be listening for movement, not trying to understand the whole map for the first time.

Listen for Direction Language

Common map language includes turn left, turn right, opposite, next to, behind, in front of, at the end of, past, between, and on the corner.

Speakers may correct themselves or mention distractors. If you hear a location and then a correction, follow the final confirmed direction.

Track the Route With Your Finger

During practice, physically trace the route on the page or screen. This keeps you anchored and reduces the chance of jumping to a nearby label too early.

If you get lost, return to the last certain point instead of guessing from the whole map.

Predict the Type of Answer

Look at the answer choices or blank labels before listening. Decide whether you are expecting a room, facility, road, building, or area.

Prediction makes it easier to catch the right word when the speaker says it only once.

Practice Method

Practice map questions in short sets. After each set, replay the audio and mark the exact phrase that gave the answer.

Your goal is not just to know the correct label. Your goal is to understand which direction phrase led to that label.
