IELTS Listening Note Completion Strategy

Note completion questions test whether you can predict missing information, listen for detail, and enter answers that fit grammar and word-limit rules.

Read the Notes First

Before the audio begins, read the heading and surrounding notes. Predict whether each blank needs a noun, number, date, adjective, or phrase.

Prediction narrows what you are listening for.

Watch Word Limits

If the instruction says no more than two words and/or a number, your answer must follow that limit.

Answers that contain too many words can be marked wrong even when the idea is correct.

Check Grammar Fit

After writing the answer, read the note with your answer inserted. It should fit grammatically.

Grammar fit can help you catch singular/plural and word-form mistakes.

Frequently asked questions

What should I predict in note completion?

Predict the type of word needed, such as a noun, number, place, date, or adjective.

Do word limits matter?

Yes. Exceeding the word limit can make an otherwise correct answer wrong.

Should I review with transcripts?

Yes. Transcripts help you see exactly how the answer was introduced.
